The 205th edition of the North West Derby will take place at Anfield on Sunday when the top two teams in the Premier League meet in a classic battle. Take a look at our Liverpool vs Manchester United Preview and see what we prepared for this exciting clash.
Liverpool Recent Form & Team News
Nothing’s been going right for defending champions Liverpool recently, with just one goal scored and an awful shot conversion rate of 2.22% across their three Premier League games following Christmas. It’s not a great time to welcome fierce-rivals Manchester United then, a side that sits top of the table at this stage of a campaign for the first time since the Sir Alex Ferguson era, for a North West derby that’s only ever produced one goalless game when held in January – and that was back in 1920!
It took Liverpool until the 75th minute to have a shot on target in their last PL match – their latest such time in the PL for over five years – but the division’s best home side (W7, D1) can take heart from scoring a league-high 2.63 goals on average here, and securing a clean sheet against United in four of the last five competitive H2Hs at Anfield (W3, D2).
Player to watch: After scoring his last three goals after the 60th minute, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah might repeat his second-half strike in the previous derby.
Hot stat: Both teams have scored before HT in 62.5% of Liverpool’s PL home games, and 62.5% of United’s PL away games.
Jurgen Klopp cannot count on Virgil van Dijk (knee), Joe Gomez (knee), Diogo Jota (knee), Konstantinos Tsimikas (knee), and Naby Keita (muscle). Joel Matip is questionable with a groin injury.
Manchester United Recent Form & Team News
Injuries continue to plague the Reds, particularly in defence, and that’ll be something the league’s best away side (W7, D1) and top away scorers (2.75 on average per match), United, will look to exploit. Although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men will be aware that no team has taken all three points in a Premier League game at Anfield in 67 fixtures, they’ll have little to fear considering they’ve won despite conceding the opener in an astounding 75% of their 2020/21 top-flight road trips.
That’s contributed to the Red Devils’ current 11-game unbeaten PL run in which they hit the scoresheet at least twice on seven occasions – they’ve done that in 35.71% of their trips to Anfield since the PL’s formation too.
Player to watch: Marcus Rashford scored before halftime in two of United’s last three PL road trips.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be without Phil Jones (knee), Marcos Rojo (calf), and Ben Williams (knock). Victor Lindelof (back), Anthony Martial (muscle), and Nemanja Matic (groin) are questionable to feature.
