The defending Premier League champions Liverpool are having a rough time trying to retain their title this season. Now, the question arise: Can Liverpool defend the title?
Still, they do sit in 2nd place of with three points behind arch-rivals Manchester United. The Reds are struggling with many things such as injuries to key players. Also they’ve been on the wrong side of some controversial decisions from the referees. For instance, when Jordan Pickford injured star player Virgil Van Dijk, but VAR deemed it fine after checking because it was offside. And, in the same game against Everton, when Jordan Henderson’s late goal was disallowed without any reason…
Van Dijk’s importance to the team
Virgil Van Dijk was a key player since he signed from Southampton for £75m in 2018. At the time, it was a massive fee, but proved to be a great deal with VVD transforming Liverpool to become back the European powerhouse that they used to be. With VVD injured, it has left a massive void to fill in defence for Liverpool. Other injuries to players like Joe Gomez and Joel Matip has made the defence even more stretched this season. Liverpool had to field seven different players to play in the centre-back role this term, which shows the number of injury worries they have. They can’t get a consistent run of the same team, which can be an issue for Jurgen Klopp.
With teams like Manchester United and Manchester City aiming to take the title this season, it is looking less and less likely that Liverpool will retain the silverware. I think they need to reinforce the January transfer window, even though Klopp has spoken about potentially not spending anything. With big games coming against Manchester United twice within the space of a week in different competitions, they need to consider rotation. United and City have big squads with lots of quality, so they can rotate and rest. That is quite important this season, especially with the heavy fixture schedule. This has been highlighted in the recent form. Namely, Liverpool won only two out of the last six Premier League matches. It is not good enough for the team with the title aspiration.
A new centre-back is a must
The Merseysiders have been linked to quite a few centre-backs during the window. David Alaba and Sergio Ramos were among the names rumoured. They are the world-class players but not really what Liverpool want. Liverpool are looking for a fairly young centre-back who is rather experienced in the European top 5 leagues, and who isn’t going to break the bank. Liverpool have looked at Ajax centre-back Peer Schuurs, but it seems it won’t happen due to him wanting to stay.
In my opinion, they should go for a defender called Loic Bade who looks a promising defender and plays for the French team RC Lens. He is 21, he’s tall and strong, and is possesses decent quickness. Bade surprised many of being in France this season with his stunning performances. Even though Bade wouldn’t be expensive acquisition at the moment, Lens don’t want to let him go this January. The French outfit is determined to keep the young defender at Stade Bollaert-Delelishim, so they add more to his price, which might make him unaffordable for Liverpool.
