One of Chelsea’s greatest ever players, Frank Lampard, is currently struggling at managing a very talented Chelsea team. Club has lots of youth and experience in their ranks, having spent a lot of money in the summer transfer window. I will be looking at the different aspects of Lampard’s Chelsea woes and what the future could bring.
The 2019/20 Season and Summer Signings
Frank Lampard had a really good first season as Chelsea boss. He secured a Champions League spot on the final day of the campaign against Wolves without spending any money in the transfer window, with Chelsea under a transfer embargo. Therefore, Roman Abramovic backed the manager in the summer by bringing in a bunch of different signings from various countries across Europe.
Chelsea spent around £215m on players in the previous window, bringing in German duo Kai Havertz and Timo Werner as marquee signings. They also brought in Hakim Ziyech from Ajax, Edouard Mendy from Stade Rennais, and Ben Chilwell from the Premier League side Leicester City. There were also free signings as the Champions League finalist, Thiago Silva, and a younger defender Malang Sarr were added to the promising squad.
The Start of the 2020/21 Season
Chelsea didn’t start the season very well, winning three out of their first nine games in all competitions. That didn’t please Lampard, but the signings started to adapt and showed some quality that was highlighted in a stunning 4-0 win over Crystal Palace, in which Ben Chilwell had an exceptional game. At this time, they hadn’t signed goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, and they were using under-performing Kepa. After Mendy’s debut, Chelsea went on a run of great defensive displays. In the following ten matches, they managed to keep eight clean sheets and concede only two goals. This run had many different pundits speaking about Lampard’s side being on for the title with the struggles of many big teams taken into consideration. It had seen Chelsea qualify for the UEFA Champions League knockout stages unbeaten.
The team’s recent form has derailed since they won 3-1 at Stamford Bridge against newly-promoted Leeds. Since, Chelsea allowed goals from unforced errors, which are costing the side vital points, and they are starting to drop down the league table. Losses to London rivals Arsenal, Everton, Wolves, and a draw with Aston Villa have demoralized Chelsea fans. Then, the recent game against Manchester City where Chelsea were sloppy and torn apart by a super City’s team. This made fans turn to social media to show their anger and frustration towards Lampard and the team with lots of people calling for him to be sacked. According to The Athletic, the Chelsea hierarchy was looking at potential replacements, showing Lampard’s place was under threat. He had a game against League 2 Morecambe in the FA Cup where he rotated his squad and used some players he normally wouldn’t.
Areas of Concern for Lampard
The underwhelming signings of Timo Werner and Kai Havertz have hurt Lampard and have got a lot of criticism from fans and the media. Werner started the season fairly well, playing in a left-wing role and was scoring regularly. However, he started to slow down and was on a 10-game goal drought before scoring against Morecambe. Lampard has tried everything; by moving his positions across the forward line and changing personnel like bringing in Oliver Giroud from time to time. Kai Havertz has struggled even more than his German compatriot as he is struggling to get a place in the Chelsea team. Havertz has had three goal contributions in 15 matches that he has contributed in. It is certainly not good enough for the £80m+ price he was bought for from Bayer Leverkusen last summer.
Another recent issue for Lampard has been the defence which was so impressive at the start of the season. Reece James’ injury has been a big blow for them as he was hitting a good run of form. Some latest errors of Mendy are starting to affect the team, such as the penalty he gave away against Everton.
Potential Answers to Lampard’s Chelsea Woes
Considering the position that Lampard is in, the potential answer might not be able to happen due to trust issues between Roman Abramovic and Frank Lampard. If they could sign a young talented defensive midfielder Declan Rice, I think that would be an amazing signing for Lampard. Rice can take the weight of N’Golo Kante either by playing with him and do the defensive work with him or replace Kante completely. Frank Lampard could also switch Rice into a midfielder who possess attacking qualities – something that Lampard had as a player. Also, Declan Rice can play as a centre back.
I think bringing in Olivier Giroud is a must for Frank Lampard because he is a proven world-class striker. Giroud can produce goals compared to where Timo Werner has lacked recently for the Blues. Potentially, Frank must bring Havertz in as a right-winger or in Mason Mount’s current role. Still, Kai needs to provide the same amount of energy as Mount.
Frank Lampard has a tricky run of games in the remainder of January but can he turn it around at Chelsea? What do you think, Chelsea fans? Is there a way out? Will Lampard’s Chelsea woes stop soon? Will he lose his job?
