The home team is desperate to record its first Serie A win in six matches, while the visitors are looking for the second victory is six games. The rivals meet at Dacia Arena on Sunday, and this is our Udinese vs Napoli Preview.
Udinese Recent Form & Team News
Midtable Udinese are just four points above the Serie A relegation zone after a five-match winless league run (D3, L2). The declining defensive standards have played their part, which has seen Udinese concede 39.13% of their 23 SA campaign goals during this winless sequence. Scoring first could be their ticket out of this slump though, as Udinese have won all three of their SA games in which they scored first.
Ironically, Udinese have failed to score in four of their seven SA home games, including the last two. Their home goal tally (five) is worse than all other SA clubs bar Parma (three), although Udinese have conceded just 1.29 goals per SA home game. Understandably, five of Udinese’s seven SA home games have produced under 2.5 total goals, whilst only two witnessed goals at both ends.
Player to watch: Rodrigo de Paul has been Udinese’s only scorer with each of his two SA home goals.
Luca Gotti cannot count on Mato Jajalo (knee), Bram Nuytinck (calf), Stefano Okaka (thigh), and Ignacio Pussetto (knee).
Napoli Recent Form & Team News
Napoli are going through a slump themselves, losing three of their last five Serie A matches (W1, D1, L3). Their tally of five SA losses this campaign is their worst such number at this stage of any top-flight season since 2007/08. An eye on the referee’s pocket wouldn’t be misplaced, as five of Napoli’s last nine SA matches saw a red card produced for either side – that’s despite Napoli boasting the joint-lowest tally of yellow cards in SA this campaign (26), together with Udinese.
I Partenopei are yet to draw an away league game, whilst winning five of seven SA road trips (W5, L2). Strong defensive performances have been the name of the game, as Napoli averaged just 0.71 SA ‘goals against’ in those seven matches, whilst managing three clean sheets.
Player to watch: Lorenzo Insigne has scored four away goals this league campaign – helping Napoli to a win on each occasion.
Hot stat: Napoli are unbeaten in the last four SA away H2Hs (W3, D1) but only once before managed a five-match unbeaten H2H away run – between 1997 and 2008.
Gennaro Gattuso will be without Diego Demme (back), Dries Mertens (ankle), and Victor Osimhen (illness).
