The Reds are looking to go three points clear at the top of the Premier League with a win at St. Mary’s on Monday. Check out our Southampton vs Liverpool Preview and get the latest stats and team news.

Southampton Recent Form & Team News

Southampton (W7, D5, L4) have made their best 16-game start to a Premier League season since 2014/15 – a campaign which saw them finish seventh. They’ve profited from scoring first in ten (62.5%) of their league fixtures this term (W6, D2, L2), although they’ve failed to score in three consecutive PL matches (D2, L1), causing some concern.

The Saints’ 0-0 draw against West Ham United here (Dec 29) was their first stalemate in nine home league games, while the Saints netted 2+ goals in seven of those fixtures. Interestingly, their last four goalscoring outings at St Mary’s have seen them ahead by the 35th minute.

Player to watch: Ex-Liverpool man Danny Ings’ recent return from injury is a boost for Southampton. The Saints are unbeaten in his last four goalscoring PL games (W3, D1).

Ralph Hasenhuttl will be without Alex McCarthy (illness), Nathan Redmond (muscle), and Jannik Vestergaard (knee).

Liverpool Recent Form & Team News

Liverpool began 2021 by topping the Premier League table, and although they’re unbeaten in 12 league games (W6, D6), their last four draws have come against sides that ended 2020 in the bottom half of the league. The Reds are unbeaten in the last eight PL H2Hs (W6, D2), and each of the last three fixtures therein featured at least one goal after the 80th minute.

The crown weighs particularly heavy on the champions’ heads when traveling, with Liverpool winning just one of their last seven PL away fixtures (W1, D5, L1). Yet, in addition to earning an average of 6.5 corners per away league fixture, Liverpool have scored five (50%) of their second-half league away goals this term in the 15-minute period after the break.

Player to watch: Mohammad Salah topped the goalscoring list in 2020 with 23 goals.

Hot stat: Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has won all four previous H2Hs against Ralph Hasenhüttl, with nine (69.23%) out of 13 goals scored by his sides therein coming after HT.

Klopp cannot count on Joe Gomez (knee), Virgil van Dijk (knee), and Diogo Jota (knee). Joel Matip (groin), Naby Keita (muscle), and Konstantinos Tsimikas (knee) are also unavailable.
