The Red Devils have an opportunity to level up with Liverpool at the top of the Premier League, but the visitors have other plans at Old Trafford on Friday. Check out our Manchester United vs Aston Villa Preview.
Manchester United Recent Form & Team News
Manchester United prolonged their undefeated Premier League streak to nine matches (W7, D2) as they beat Wolves in the latest round. They scored in the 93rd minute – their latest winning strike in a league match at home since September 2009. That took the Red Devils to only three points off top place. It’s the closest they have been to the first place after 15 league games since the Sir Alex Ferguson-era.
Four unbeaten matches at Old Trafford (W3, D1), after collecting only one point in the four before that positive run, shows United’s improvement. The defense played a big part in that solid streak as it allowed just once before the 70th minute. Additionally, United is without a loss in the previous seven H2H home duels (W6, D1).
Player to watch: Bruno Fernandes recorded another assist in the previous round. No player has been directly involved in more Premier League goals (18 goals, 14 assists) since the Portuguese joined United.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer cannot count on Edinson Cavani (suspension), Phil Jones (knee), and Marcos Rojo (calf). Victor Lindelof (back) is questionable to feature.
Aston Villa Recent Form & Team News
Although Manchester United are playing their best football of the season, they face an in-form Aston Villa team that’s undefeated in five games (W3, D2). The Lions kept their net intact in four in the process. That, in a combination with an impressive average of 2.0 goals scored per league match, has moved Villa into European place contention. It is their best 14-game start to a league campaign since 2007/08. In that season, Aston Villa ended in 6th place.
Villa suffered only one road defeat in this PL season (W5, D1, L1), and recorded three more away victories than the entirety of 2019/20. Every time Villa scored the first match goal away away from home, they won without conceding, so they’ll be eager to open this one on a high note.
Player to watch: Anwar El Ghazi scored in three matches in a row.
Hot stat: We saw even five red cards in Villa’s previous seven Premier League games.
Dean Smith will be without Trezeguet (thigh) and Wesley (knee), while Ross Barkley (thigh) is questionable to play.
