The Reds are looking for the sixth consecutive win over the Magpies when they visit St. James’ Park on Wednesday. Here you can see our Newcastle United vs Liverpool Preview for this Premier League tilt.
Newcastle United Recent Form & Team News
After losing on a Boxing Day for a Premier League-record 15th time last time out, Newcastle United now face a tough match against league-leaders Liverpool – a team they’ve lost five straight H2Hs against. A four-game winless run in all competitions entering this clash (D1, L3) is worrying form, even more so considering at St James’ Park, Newcastle are currently enduring a run of 11 PL games without a clean sheet – their longest such streak since February 2005.
Newcastle’s home form has been as mid-table as it gets so far (W3, D1, L3), although the fact they’ve picked up a penalty in three of their last six top-flight games here – as many as they managed in their 58 PL home matches prior – shows they have been causing a nuisance to away sides.
Player to watch: Callum Wilson has been Newcastle’s first goalscorer in the last three PL games in which he’s scored.
Steve Bruce cannot count on Martin Dubravka (calf), Jamaal Lascelles (illness), and Allan Saint-Maximin (calf). Ryan Fraser (groin) and Jonjo Shelvey (groin) are questionable to play.
Liverpool Recent Form & Team News
Liverpool will have been bitterly disappointed with their 1-1 draw against relegation-threatened West Brom at the weekend, a result that gave the reigning champions their sixth winless game of the league season (W9, D5, L1) – the same number they accumulated during the entirety of their Premier League winning campaign last term. Still, they can take solace from their league-leading average of 2.47 goals scored per match.
That average was aided by a spectacular PL-club record 7-0 win in Liverpool’s last away game – a result that showed their creativity across the pitch as for the first time in PL history seven different players from the same side provided an assist in a single game. However, that was just Liverpool’s second PL away win this term (W2, D4, L1), and the first in which they led at the break (HT: W1, D4, L2).
Player to watch: Mohamed Salah has scored in Liverpool’s last three competitive away games, twice as their first goalscorer.
Hot streak: There hasn’t been a goalless draw in the last 68 top-flight H2Hs.
Jurgen Klopp will be without Joe Gomez (knee), Diogo Jota (knee), and Virgil van Dijk (knee). Naby Keita (muscle), Joel Matip (groin), and Konstantinos Tsimikas (knee) are also unavailable. Thiago Alcantara (knee) is questionable to feature.
