The Hammers have a chance to level up with the Saints with three points at St. Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday. Have a look at our Southampton vs West ham United Preview and see what we think of this Premier League clash.
Southampton Recent Form & Team News
A goalless draw on Boxing Day gave Southampton a third winless game in a row (D2, L1) as the Saints recorded just three shot attempts – the joint-fewest they’ve registered in a Premier League game since 2003/04. After failing to score in two consecutive PL matches – and on the verge of three goalless for the first time in over two years – Southampton must now face West Ham United, a team they’ve lost five straight H2Hs against.
That H2H streak could be extended here considering Southampton are yet to draw a PL home game this term (W4, L3). However, if the hosts do manage to triumph, expect them to strike early as all four PL home wins this season saw Southampton lead at HT, as have their last four competitive H2H home victories.
Player to watch: Che Adams has scored in Southampton’s last three home wins and will look to threaten again.
Ralph Hasenhuttl will be without Danny Ings (thigh), Nathan Redmond (muscle), and Jannik Vestergaard (knee).
West Ham United Recent Form & Team News
West Ham have a promising history in December fixtures at Southampton though, last losing an away H2H in this month back in 1946, playing seven such fixtures unbeaten since (W4, D3). That’ll be a morale boost for the Hammers after a 3-0 defeat at Chelsea in their last road trip ended a nine-game Premier League scoring run on the road.
The back and forth nature of West Ham’s PL away games this term have seen an identical number of goals scored and conceded (both averaging 1.56 per fixture), and subsequently only two of their seven matches witnessed the HT result replicated at FT. However to their credit, the three PL away wins they’ve picked up so far (W3, D1, L3) is just one shy of their entire away tally from last campaign.
Player to watch: West Ham’s danger man could be Sébastien Haller, who scored their last away opener, and has netted in two straight H2Hs.
Hot stat: Only one of the last ten H2Hs featured a goalless first half.
David Moyes cannot count on Arthur Masuaku (knee), while Michail Antonio (thigh) is questionable.
