5 Players who had a TREMENDOUS 2020

Done with the worst, time to focus on the best!!

After checking out some of the worst performers in 2020, let’s look at the “glass full” side and pick out 5 players who had a tremendous 2020. There are probably clear picks that every football fan should agree upon. However, if you feel annoyed by the subjective nature of this list, feel free to comment or reach out to me on Twitter @SidePsp or on Instagram @pitchsidepod…

Long story short, let’s get into it. A disclaimer though, this list is again based on standards as much as how crucial they were for their clubs.

Let’s crack on with the list…

5 – Bruno Fernandes

I can feel the rage of any Manchester United fan who would look at this list and say: how is he only 5th?. Well, first because obviously there is 4 people ahead of him (quick math), but also because his influence, as big as it is, didn’t exactly bring Man Utd trophies (yet). However, his effect on the way the red devils play is undoubted. Contributing in 24 goals as of these words being written (13 goals and 11 assists), he is simply undroppable. It is impossible to imagine Man Utd now without the Portuguese calm and composed touch in the midfield.

His move to Old trafford early in January generated a lot of hype around him, considering that Manchester united were also trying to get Jadon Sancho as well. He came into the team, and never looked back. He might not be getting any younger at 30 years of age, but he can still deliver some magic when the club comes calling for him.

His ability to adapt and adjust himself to numerous positions on the pitch, despite being mainly a number 10, made him a focal part of Solskjaer’s tactical shape. Whether it is as a CAM, CM, RW or even a false 9, Bruno Fernandes delivers and then some. He is by quite some margin the best signing Utd ever made in quite a while.

4 – Karim Benzema

One of the 5 players who had a tremendous 2020 is certainly this guy. The recently turned 33 year old French striker has found a fountain of youth somewhere for sure. Karim Benzema is Real Madrid’s best player of the year. He was one of three key players in their Laliga success last season, alongside Sergio Ramos and Casemiro. The former French international is so important to the way Real Madrid play that the board is ge ready to ignore (ehm) minor incidents that happen with him sometimes (vinicius jr is crying somewhere in the corner).

Since Ronaldo left the club in 2018, he took charge of leading the frontline and he damn sure made a great impact. Mariano Diaz, Luka Jovic, Vinicius, Éden Hazard you name it, they all fall behind the savior Karim Benzema.

His style of play, though trending because of his “silliness” in front of goal (to put it mildly), he just provides so much width and depth that no one in his Real Madrid can picture the current Merengue side without the superb movement, link up play, and indeed finishing for a player that history will probably remember him as someone who could have been a WC winner if he didn’t do some (ehm) bad things in the past. But did he have a great year?? Oh you can bet he did.

3 – Neymar

This is an out of left field choice, but one i stand with very strongly and support. I may have some slight against Neymar’s character and PSG as a current business club, but never doubt the truth; Neymar is a baller. 2020 was probably the first year since he joined PSG for a bonkers price tag of 222 million Euros back in 2017 where he felt like something to the MSN version of himself.

The Brazilian wizard might have not toned down his overly flamboyant persona, or decreased his diving skills, but certainly put on a shift in takong PSG to new levels. Being an instrumental part of them getting to a historic UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE final, he managed to give himself a boost and thwart a little bit of the constant (to be fair) abuse that he gets from football fans since he moved to Paris.

He might have missed the chance to be the next Messi at Barcelona, but why try to be a copycat of someone else when you can be the one and only Neymar.

2 – Zlatan Ibrahimovic

As if you were not expecting to see him featured on such a list featuring the 5 best players in 2020. I do mean it when i say that only the number one entry on this list had a better 2020 than the proclaimed “God of football” himself. And the ridiculous part is that he is doing it at 39 years and might still go for a couple more years.

Bringing AC Milan back to a level of relevancy they didn’t know since 2011, his return was the missing piece in the on-going Pioli project at the club. Brought in as an experienced head around the host of exciting youngsters at the club, he absolutely surpassed every single expectation about him.

While his career on the whole might be more miss than hit, this stint at AC Milan might go down aschis defining moment if it comes with a Serie A title for “il Nerazzuri”, which is very likely to happen considering they are top of the table and on a 30 match unbeaten streak heading into Christmas. AC Milan eventually would have returned to the top anyways, but it certainly would take longer without a CHARACTER like Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the squad.

1 – Robert Lewandowski

Let’s conclude the 5 players who had a tremendous 2020 list with this goal-scoring machine. How clear this has to be for anyone: Winning every possible trophy in Germany and in Europe, being top scorer in every competition and winning all the awards. The Pole striker might be 32 years old, but he is not slowing down anytime soon. His reception of Fifa’s “the best” award was only the cherry on top of his 2020 year.

It also helps when you have a great team by your side to set you up, but definitely the effort from said team needs someone as clinical as him to finish. 75 goals in 2020 is a number only few other players are capable of reaching, which makes his year even more impressive. Personally as a Bayern fan i didn’t want to see a striker like Lewandowski waste his years at Bayern without winning major trophies.

For him, it’s all about replicating the success. Also, he would surely love to add an international achievement of sorts into his C.V being Poland’s top scorer and their greatest player since Zbigniew Boniek. In short, 2020 belonged to Robert LewanGolski.
