Leverkusen Recent Form & Team News
Each of the last eight straight H2H duels produced goals on both ends and seven provided over 3.5 goals. This is a fantastic overture for a top-of-the-table tilt between Bayer Leverkusen and reigning champions Bayern Munich. Leverkusen stay the league’s only undefeated side (W8, D4) as they sit in first place after 12 matches for the first time since 2009/10. In that campaign, they played out a 1-1 stalemate with Bayern in the 13th round!
Peter Bosz’s team has no fear, particularly as they’ve scored 4+ goals in five of their previous seven matches at BayArena. They’ll be in the mood for revenge following Bayern’s 4-2 H2H victory in the 2020 DFB-Pokal Final. Leverkusen scored in the opening 30 minutes in four of their five Bundesliga home matches this season (W3, D2), so they will be ready to produce early.
Player to watch: Lucas Alario returned from injury with a goal in Leverkusen’s last home match. Four of his previous five league strikes came before HT.
Peter Bosz will be without Aranguiz (Achilles tendon), Santiago Arias (broken shinbone), and Sven Bender (knee). Exequiel Palacios (back) and Paulinho (knee) are also unavailable.
Bayern Munich Recent Form & Team News
However, Leverkusen face a Bayern Munich side that’s on the second-longest scoring streak in Europe’s top five leagues (25 games). Also, the Bavarians scored an average of 3.08 goals per league match this season- their best average at this stage since 1976/77. Still, Bayern’s average of 1.5 goals allowed per Bundesliga game after 12 rounds is also their joint-worst in the previous 39 years.
The 30-time Bundesliga champions visit BayArena as favorites though, but they conceded in all six opening road trips (W4, D1, L1). It’s the first time they’ve done that since 2006/07, a campaign in which Bayern ended fourth for their worst placing in the last 26 seasons.
Player to watch: Bayern’s superstar Robert Lewandowski has scored three goals across the last two H2Hs. The Polish striker also netted his 250th Bundesliga strike in midweek – only the third player to achieve that feat.
Hot streak: Bayern allowed a first-half opener in five straight competitive away games.
Hans-Dieter Flick cannot count on Tanguy Kouassi (thigh) and Javi Martinez (groin), while Leon Goretzka (muscle) is questionable.
