The battle for the top spot in the Premier League will take place at Anfield on Wednesday, so make sure you check out our Liverpool vs Tottenham Preview for that encounter.
Liverpool Recent Form & Team News
After the passing of ex-Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier a couple of days ago, we can expect an emotional Anfield on Wednesday night in a battle for the top of the table. The reigning champions and their likeliest rivals enter this midweek tilt tied on points and record (W7, D4, L1).
Recent H2H history clearly favors Jurgen Klopp’s, who is on a five-game winning run against Spurs in all competitions. In fact, Liverpool have now played 51 matches against the top six sides of 2017, 2018 and 2019 under Jurgen Klopp, winning 24 of them (D19, L8).
Though favorites yet again, the Reds drew three of their previous six games- five of which provided under 2.5 total goals. At Anfield, however, Liverpool have a 100% record in the Premier League thus far – scoring in all six first halves and leading at the interval in four. All six also produced over 2.5 total goals, and Liverpool netted their last goal in the final 15 minutes in five.
Player to watch: Mohamed Salah rescued a PL point for Liverpool in the last round with a penalty – three of his five home PL strikes this season have come from the spot.
Jurgen Klopp will be without Thiago Alcantara (knee), Joe Gomez (knee), Virgil van Dijk (knee), and Diogo Jota (knee). James Milner (thigh), Xherdan Shaqiri (muscle), and Konstantinos Tsimikas (knee) are also sidelined. Naby Keita (muscle) and Joel Matip (back) are questionable to face Spurs.
Tottenham Recent Form & Team News
Encouragingly for Tottenham Hotspur, each of manager Jose Mourinho’s previous sides – if including only Premier League seasons he has completed with them – ended where they stood after 12 games. In this case – at the top of the league. They are undefeated in the PL since their opening day loss to Everton, and scored in all but one game since.
Furthermore, Tottenham’s duo Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min is opnly one goalscoring combination behind matching the existing assist/goal combo record of 13, set by title winners Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton for Blackburn Rovers in 1994/95. The wait may not be long, as Tottenham have done their job early so far, scoring 13 of their previous 19 goals (68.42%) in the opening half.
Player to watch: Harry Kane has been directly involved in five goals in six PL away games against Liverpool (four goals, one assist).
Hot stat: Just nine of the 28 goals scored in PL H2Hs at Anfield after Tottenham’s last win here (May 2011) have come from a British player – Kane accounts for four (44.44%) of those.
Jose Mourinho cannot count on Erik Lamela (calf) and Japhet Tanganga (shoulder). Gareth Bale is questionable due to an illness.
