Zinedine Zidane’s squad is hoping for the third consecutive LaLiga victory on Tuesday when they welcome the always unpleasant Basques at Alfredo di Stéfano Stadium. Here is our Real Madrid vs Bilbao Preview.
Real Madrid Recent Form & Team News
Defending champions Real Madrid ended Atlético’s Madrid’s club record unbeaten LaLiga streak with a crucial 2-0 win over their rivals, in a game that not only saw them bridge the gap between themselves and top spot, but also saw Real concede zero shots at goal during the first half – something they’ve not achieved across any of the past 17 top-flight seasons.
Despite that result, it’s still been a disappointing LL home campaign so far (W3, L2), with Madrid netting an average of just 1.6 goals per fixture. They conceded the opener within 20 minutes in two of their last four LL games here. However, Los Galacticos haven’t lost a competitive home H2H versus Athletic Bilbao since February 2005 (W14, D2 following).
Player to watch: Karim Benzema made his 528th appearance in all competitions for Madrid last time out, a new club-record for a non-Spanish player. He netted a hat-trick in their last H2H home win.
Hot stat: Madrid have hit the woodwork 22 times in LL this calendar year, more than any other side bar Sevilla (24).
Zinedine Zidane will be without Eden Hazard (knee), Luka Jovic (muscle), and Martin Odegaard (muscle). Mariano Diaz is questionable to play on Tuesday.
Bilbao Recent Form & Team News
It’s been an uninspiring LaLiga campaign for Athletic (W4, D2, L6) who travel here on a three-game winless run (D2, L1) following their 2-2 draw at Valencia. Whilst they managed to claw back a point after going into HT 1-0 down in that match, strong second-half performances are a rare occurrence for Athletic this season who’ve lost a league-high five matches when level at HT.
They also travel here winless in six of seven LL road trips (W1, D2, L4), and unsurprisingly, it’s been the second half that’s let Bilbao down. Across their away matches, Athletic have conceded just two first-half goals, but four times that in the second. That’s important as the last five goals they’ve conceded at Real also came after HT.
Player to watch: Asier Villalibre has been their first goalscorer in two straight LL away games.
Gaizka Garitano cannot count on Peru Nolaskoain (muscle), but the rest of the players are healthy and ready to go.
