The 226th El Derbi Madrileño will take place on Saturday, and here is our Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid Preview for that LaLiga Round 13 duel.
Real Madrid Recent Form & Team News
A 1-0 win in the last LaLiga round has kept Real Madrid in touch with the top three, but six points behind city-rivals Atlético Madrid – who also have a game in hand – and makes this one of the most significant Madrid derbies in recent years. Real at least bring an eight-game LL H2H unbeaten run into this clash (W3, D5), but with topsy-turvy five-game league form (W2, D1, L2), this match is anyone’s guess.
Yet to record consecutive LL home wins this term (W2, L2), and with just 1.5 goals scored on average per home match, it’s been an uncharacteristic season for the defending champions who have conceded the opener within 20 minutes in both losses here. In fact, their 2-1 defeat versus Alavés in their last LaLiga home game gave Real a third defeat of the campaign – the same number they recorded in the entirety of last season.
Player to watch: Karim Benzema has scored before HT in his last three competitive home appearances for Real.
Zinedine Zidane cannot count on Mariano Diaz, Eden Hazard (knee), Luka Jovic (muscle), Martin Odegaard, and Federico Valverde (shin).
Atletico Madrid Recent Form & Team News
Unstoppable Atlético’s club record unbeaten LL streak was extended to 26 games in the last round (W17, D9), and boasting the best defense across Europe’s top five divisions this season (0.2 goals conceded per match) has been a huge factor in that success, and has seen Atlético equal the LL record for least goals conceded after ten rounds. However an average of 2.1 goals scored per match has also fired Atlético to a win despite a -1 handicap in six of their eight LL victories, and to a HT lead in five.
Three straight LaLiga away wins will have Atlético primed to go for their first LL victory at Real since February 2016. However just two league goals before HT on the road so far, and two goalless first halves from four LL away games (W3, D1), means this game might start slowly.
Player to watch: João Félix has scored in both halves in two of Atlético’s last five LL wins.
Hot stat: Six of the last seven LL derbies were goalless at HT.
Diego Simeone will be without Diego Costa (muscle), Jose Maria Gimenez (muscle), and Geoffrey Kondogbia.
