Cam Newton will be sporting No. 1 when he takes the field for the New England Patriots. Tom Brady’s successor will be the first Pats’ player with the No. 1 on his back since barefooted kicker Tony Franklin in 1987.
Newton wore the No. 2 jersey during his one season at Auburn, winning the national championship and a Heisman Trophy. Since he joined the NFL as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft, Cam Newton has played 132 games for the Carolina Panthers with the No. 1 on his back.
In the Patriots history, the No. 1 has only been worn by kickers John Smith, Tony Franklin, and Eric Schubert. Interestingly, since 1987, the only person to wear the No. 1 jersey number was New England’s mascot, Pat Patriot.
