Champions League Betting Tip: Liverpool vs Salzburg

Posted by

Liverpool are looking to bounce back from an opening-round loss to Napoli as they welcome Salzburg tonight, so let’s have a look at our Champions League Betting Tip for this encounter. The Reds are massive favourites to beat the Austrian champions and secure their first victory of this year’s UCL. After a road defeat to Napoli, the reigning champions must get three points here. Salzburg, on the other hand, destroyed Genk in the first game but will face the toughest test against the side that never lost a European match at home under Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool Team News and Latest Form

Liverpool opened their Champions League group stage by losing 2-0 at Napoli, but are still heavy favourites at fortress Anfield. They won five of their six CL home matches last season (D1), and are unbeaten in 22 European home games (W16, D6). Additionally, they’ve kept a clean sheet in five straight CL home fixtures.

The Reds have won nine of 11 competitive matches this season, and have scored in every game bar that Napoli defeat, netting an average of 2.0 goals on average per game (extra-time excluded). Somewhat curiously, one of last season’s tightest defences has conceded in eight of those 11 matches so far.

Forner Salzburg man, Sadio Mané, is now a star at Liverpool – four of his five goals this term arrived in the first half. All three competitive matches at Anfield this season have witnessed over 3.5 goals.

Jurgen Klopp cannot count on Xherdan Shaqiri (calf), Nathaniel Clyne (knee), and Joel Matip (knock). Alisson is close to returning from his calf injury and will probably be ready to face Manchester United at Old Trafford later this month.

Salzburg Team News and Latest Form

Salzburg might be just the team to exploit that goalscoring record at Anfield. The Austrians have scored a whopping 45 goals across their last ten competitive matches (4.5 on average) including six on CL matchday one – their first group stage fixture for 25 years!

The visitors opened their season with eight straight domestic wins and have won 11 of 12 competitive matches so far (one after extra-time). In fact, they’ve scored at least two goals in nine of the 12 first halves they’ve played this season.

Remarkably, Erling Braut Haaland’s hat-trick in the opening group stage match was his fourth of the season – he’s netted 17 competitive goals for Salzburg this term already! However, he is doubtful to face Liverpool due to an illness.

Jesse Marsch will be without Alexander Walke (foot) and Antoine Bernede (broken leg).

Liverpool vs Salzburg Head to Head

These rivals have never met before. Liverpool faced Austrian clubs on six occasions and have a record of W4, D1, L1, with a goal difference 13-3. Salzburg have lost their last three matches against Premier League opposition to nil.

Liverpool vs Salzburg Champions League Betting Tip

Liverpool scored three or more goals in each of their three home games this season while they also conceded a goal in all three. Salzburg scored 2+ goals in each of their six road matches this year, but now are facing the strongest opponent thus far, and it’s going to be hard to score more than a goal at Anfield. I expect to see goals here, and that’s why my Champions League Betting Tip for this duel is Liverpool to win and Over 3 goals at 2.10 (+110). Another good option is Liverpool to win and BTTS at 2.25 (+125). Check out to see more Champions League betting picks and stay with us for tomorrow’s Europa League predictions as well.
