The 2019 US Open Men’s Singles starts Monday, August 26, 2019, with 32 matches from the top half of a draw. The reigning champ Novak Djokovic takes the court as a massive fave to beat Roberto Carballes Baena, and World No. 1 tops the bookies’ list at 2.20 odds to win his fourth title in New York.
Novak got a tough draw, unlike Rafael Nadal who’s listed at 4.00 odds to win his fourth US Open. Djokovic will probably play the home favorite Sam Querrey in the second round. The former US Open Men’s Singles champion Stan Wawrinka looms in the fourth round, while Novak could meet the 5th seed Stanislas Medvedev in the quarterfinal.
On the other side, Rafa opens against World No. 60 John Millman. The Australian seems like the toughest rival for Rafa in the first three rounds, while World No. 2 could meet John Isner in the Round of 16. The 8th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and 4th seed Dominic Thiem are both in Nadal’s half of a draw.
World No. 3 and a five-time US Open titlist Roger Federer is an 8.00 underdog to win the trophy in New York. He’s in the top half of a draw alongside Novak Djokovic and will open against the qualifier Sumit Nagal. Arguably, Roger got a good draw and should easily reach the quarterfinals.
2019 US Open Men’s Singles Future Odds
It’s tough to wager against the Big Three who won the last 11 Grand Slams. However, Daniil Medvedev could upset the odds and win his first major title at 13.00. Medvedev is playing in a tremendous form, reaching the finals in Washington and Montreal while winning the ATP Masters in Cincinnati.
Likewise, Medvedev defeated Djokovic twice this season, but the big question is whether he can do it in the best-of-five format? Medvedev is still a 5.50 underdog to win the 1st quarter of a draw.
My best pick is Roger Federer at 1.90 to win the 2nd quarter of a draw. Kei Nishikori and David Goffin could be Roger’s rivals in the quarterfinal, and I don’t think they stand a chance if Federer plays at the highest level.
Rafael Nadal is a 1.65 fave to win the 4th quarter of a draw which is another interesting wager. However, I’m concerned about Rafa’s knee issues, but if he stays healthy, the Spaniard will make it to the last four.
The 3rd quarter of a draw will be full of exciting matches. Dominic Thiem is a 4.00 fave to reach the semis, but Stefanos Tsitsipas (4.50), Roberto Bautista Agut (6.50), and Nick Kyrgios (8.00) all have good chances to win the 3rd quarter of a draw.
2019 US Open First Round Picks – Day 1
Tomas Berdych is far away from his best form, but World No. 98 should beat World No. 394 Jenson Brooksby at 1.35 odds. The 12th seed Borna Coric is a 1.25 fave against the qualifier Evgeny Donskoy, and I expect Borna to get the job done in three or four sets.
Sam Querrey is a 1.25 fave against Juan Londero, and the American could have a tricky job. Londero plays well and has a 21-15 record in 2019, but he’s a typical clay-court player. Likewise, I’m backing Guido Pella and Pablo Carreno-Busta to play at least four sets at 1.35 odds.
