EFL Championship Betting Pick: West Brom vs Reading

Posted by

Take a look at our EFL Championship Betting Pick for the tilt between West Brom and Reading as the fourth round continues this midweek. The Baggies opened this season on a high note, and even though they suffered elimination in EFL Cup, they collected seven points in the first three rounds of the Championship. On the other hand, the Royals lost the first two games of the campaign but bounced back with straight wins over Wycombe in EFL Cup, and then over Cardiff at home.

West Brom Team News and Latest Form

West Bromwich Albion opened their Championship home campaign with a 1-1 draw to Millwall, and will now be eager to get a win under their belts at The Hawthorns. However, they failed to claim all three points in 11 of their 23 home league matches last season (W12, D7, L4), although they only dropped points in three home games versus bottom-half clubs.

The Baggies may have scored five league goals across three Championship games so far, but they’ll be eager to improve their strike rate. That’s because although they’re averaging 15.7 shots per match, that number drastically reduces to just 3.3 in terms of attempts on target.

New signing Charlie Austin has scored 66 goals in 130 Championship appearances throughout his career. West Brom scored the opener in 21 Championship matches last season and didn’t lose any (W17, D4).

Slaven Bilić doesn’t have any new injury-related concerns as almost all of the players are healthy and at his disposal. Ahmed Hegazy (ankle) and Hal Robson-Kanu (back).

Reading Team News and Latest Form

Reading must improve their away form if they’re to have aspirations of a play-off push this time around. They’ve only won three of 34 Championship away matches since the beginning of 2018, with two coming against clubs who went on to be relegated.

José Gomes has overseen 13 away league contests as Reading manager (W1, D6, L6), with his team conceding at least twice in six, and failing to score in five. In fact, last season the Royals were one of only six teams in England’s top four tiers to have won two or fewer away league games.

Lucas João has scored in his last two away matches, one for his new club and the other for former side Sheffield Wednesday. Last season, both teams scored in 60.87% of Reading’s away league matches.

José Gomes will be without defender Tyler Blackett (muscle) while Jordan Obita is doubtful with a knee injury.

West Brom vs Reading Head to Head

Reading won four of the previous ten H2H encounters (D3, L3) but they are without a victory in the last two duels. West Brom have won the last three home league H2H tilts, with Reading last winning away in the league in this H2H on February 27, 1988.

West Brom vs Reading EFL Championship Betting Pick

Three of the last four H2H games produced goals on both ends, which was the case with four of the previous five at The Hawthorns. Reading improved since the start of the Championship season and George Puscas scored three goals in the past two matches. Each of West Brom’s four games this season provided goals on both sides, and that’s why my EFL Championship Betting Pick for this game is BTTS at 1.72 (-139).
