The 2019 US Open Series continues with the ATP 250 in Winston-Salem. The reigning champ Daniil Medvedev won’t defend the title, while World No. 29 Benoit Paire is set as the 1st seed, but we’ll see an interesting battle over the next seven days.
The first round will close down Monday, August 19, 2019, and all 16 seeds will take the court for the first time in the round of 16 on Tuesday. Hereof, the vast majority of the first-round matches are quite tricky to bet on, but we’ve chosen a couple of picks for our daily two-match parlay.
Jarry and Andujar are coming off a clay court
Both Nicolas Jarry and Pablo Andujar have played only on clay courts since Wimbledon, deciding to miss all tournaments from the US Open Series. Jarry won the title in Bastad back in July, while Andujar lost the championship match in Kitzbuhel.
Jarry is a 1.35 fave to beat Andujar, and I’m backing him to satisfy the odds. Nicolas has a solid serve and strong forehand, while Andujar is a typical clay-court player who relies a lot on his footwork and top-spin forehand.
They met each other once, and Jarry defeated Andujar in three sets 6-7 6-4 7-5 in Pune on a hard court last season. Jarry is 2-5 on a hard court this season and 11-18 in his career, while Andujar is 1-3 in 2019 and 31-78 in his career.
Can Alexei Popyrin make a breakthrough in Winston-Salem?
The 20-year old Alexei Popyrin is struggling to fulfill his potential, and World No. 108 has an 8-13 record in 2019. Likewise, he’s lost four of the last five matches on a hard court, but Popyrin is still a 1.50 fave to beat Thiago Monteiro in Winston-Salem, and I think he should finally break out of his slump.
Monteiro is ranked 102nd and has a 3-10 record at the ATP Tour this season. Furthermore, Thiago is 0-2 on a hard court in 2019 and 5-18 in his career. He prefers to play on clay, so Popyrin is a fave for a reason.
Alexei is pretty unpredictable and could have some problems against Monteiro’s strong forehand. However, I will rely on the combination of Alexei’s rocket serve and a fast surface in Winston-Salem.
