The second round of the EPL is playing this weekend, and here is our England Premier League Betting Preview for the tilt between Southampton and Liverpool. The Champions League winners Liverpool are travelling to the south to take on Southampton after winning the European Super Cup with a penalty shootout against Chelsea. Liverpool opened the season with a comfortable win over Norwich City at home while the Saints suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Burnley on the road.

Southampton Team News and Latest Form
Thrashed 3-0 at Burnley on the first Premier League weekend of 2019/20, Southampton could be in for a painful opening to their home campaign. The Saints have lost four straight H2Hs by a margin of two goals or more, conceding precisely three goals in three of that quartet.
The only apparent positive here is that Southampton have scored in 14 straight EPL home matches before this clash. Ultimately though, it is just a matter of when Southampton will concede. Significantly, 15 of Southampton’s 19 Premier League home matches last season saw both teams score (78.95%).
New signing Che Adams scored 22 Championship goals last season – a whopping 20 of which (90.91%) came via the right foot in open play. Southampton recorded an EPL win rate of 42.86% (W3, D1, L3) as a home outsider in 2018/19.
Ralph Hasenhüttl doesn’t have to be worried about injuries as all of the players are healthy and at his disposal for the clash with Liverpool.
Liverpool Team News and Latest Form
Liverpool, meanwhile, routinely beat newcomers Norwich in their opening match 4-1. They scored all of their goals in the first half of that match, and have scored no less than eight first-half goals in the last four H2Hs vs Southampton, accounting for 72.73% of their total scored goals across those matches.
Last season, however, they were in front at half time in less than half of their away Premier League matches (42.11%). That noted, the Reds still won 25 of 28 games against teams outside the top six, drawing three times. Furthermore, Liverpool dominated possession in their last five EPL away matches last season – 66.60% on average.
With five goals in the last four H2Hs (four scored in the first half), Mo Salah will be looking to wreak further havoc here. Defensively, Liverpool were the EPL’s best team last season, but both sides scored in more than half of their away matches (55.55%). The Reds’ away league matches featured 3+ goals 50% of the time last season.
Jurgen Klopp cannot count on Alisson (calf), Nathaniel Clyne (knee), and Naby Keita (muscle). His second-choice goalkeeper Adrian is questionable with an ankle injury after a fan tackled him during Super Cup win celebration in Istanbul.
Southampton vs Liverpool Head to Head
Liverpool won five of the previous ten H2H encounters (D2, L3), including the last four while the Reds were victorious in the past two visits to the St. Mary’s Stadium. The Reds conceded just one goal in the previous five games against Southampton, and it was in the last duel when it was 3-1 for Klopp’s side.
Southampton vs Liverpool Premier League Betting Preview
Liverpool managed to score at least two goals in each of their previous four wins over the Saints. They are firm favourites to get three points here, and after Southampton’s poor display at Burnley, I don’t think the hosts stand a chance here. My Premier League Betting Tip for the game between Southampton and Liverpool is Liverpool to win and to score over one goal at 1.72 (-138).
