Manchester City successfully started the defense of their Premier League title with a big win over West Ham. However, now they will face a much stronger rivals when Tottenham Hotspur comes to town.
The Citizens didn’t have trouble in London against West Ham United in the opening Premier League round. On the other hand, Spurs came from behind to defeat Aston Villa at home, thanks to prolific Harry Kane. Pep Guardiola’s men are strong favorites in this one, but Mauricio Pochettino’s side know how to play and will be a tough nut to crack here.

Manchester City Team News and Latest Form
Manchester City began their title defense with a comfortable 5-0 win at West Ham. They will now try to replicate the home form that saw them win 18 of 19 Premier League games at the Etihad last year, and lead at half-time in 13. The Citizens scored an impressive 3.0 goals on average per EPL home match in 2018-19 and even their top-six colleagues were destroyed by the home attack as City recorded a combined aggregate scoreline of 15-3.
Tottenham Hotspur were the first team to beat Pep Guardiola’s City in 2016, but the Sky Blues won five of seven competitive H2H duels since (W5, D1, L1), scoring an average of 2.14 goals in those seven games.
Raheem Sterling opened this campaign with a hat-trick – he scored more than one goal in four EPL games last year. Across their previous five EPL home games, City have scored half their goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half.
Pep Guardiola cannot count on Leroy Sane and Benjamin Mendy, who are both dealing with knee injuries. Fernandinho is lacking match fitness and will likely sits this one out.
Tottenham Hotspur Team News and Latest Form
Tottenham beat Aston Villa 3-1 in their season premiere after trailing at halftime. However, their fans will not be very optimistic here as they lost eight EPL away games last season – including their final six! Five of those were by a one-goal difference, just as the two latest H2H meetings in Manchester were.
Spurs opened the last season with six consecutive games featuring over 2.5 goals, with both teams scoring in five of them. Eventually, 57.89% of their league games in 2018/19 finished with 3+ goals, and half saw both sides score.
Harry Kane broke his no-goal August spell again this year with a brace against Villa. He scored four goals against other top-six teams last year, two from the penalty. No Premier League team recorded more half-time turnarounds (W/L or L/W) than Spurs’ five in 2018-19.
Mauricio Pochettino will be without Dele Alli (thigh), Son Heung-Min (suspension), Ryan Sessegnon (thigh), and Juan Foyth (ankle). Ben Davies is doubtful with a groin injury.

Manchester City won five of the last ten H2H duels (D1, L4) including five of the past six meetings. The Citizens were victorious in eight of the previous ten clashes at Etihad.
