The 2019 Wimbledon ladies’ singles championship match will see the seven-time champion and 11th seed Serena Williams taking on the 7th seed Simona Halep. Although Serena is set as a strong 1.50 fave here and Simona will play her first Wimbledon final, we expect to see a great match.
Simona is enjoying a wonderful tournament, dropping just a set against Mihaela Burzanescu in the second round. Halep won four straight matches in straight sets, and she demolished the 8th seed Elina Svitolina 6-1 6-3 in the semifinal.
Serena had a similar path to the final. She dropped a set against Kaja Juvan in the second round, while Serena barely defeated Alison Riske in the quarterfinal in three sets. However, Serena had her best match in the semis, beating Barbora Strycova 6-1 6-2.
Serena won nine of her ten meetings with Halep including the round-of-16 clash at the Australian Open earlier in the season. Serena outlasted Simona is three sets 6-1 4-6 6-4. Also, Williams won her only duel with Halep on the grass court in the round of 32 at the 2011 Wimbledon.
I think Halep stand a chance on this one if she copes with pressure well and forces her rival to long rallies. Serena Williams is on the brink of their 24th Grand Slam title which would tie her with Margaret Court’s record, so she will be under huge pressure, too.
Serena Williams should be just too much for Simona Halep, but I think the Romanian will make this final quite interesting to watch, so I’m backing the over on the game totals.
