The 2019 Wimbledon Championships Ladies’ Singles Semifinals are upon us, and we’ll see a couple of interesting matches on Thursday. The 7th-seeded Simona Halep takes on the 8th-seeded Elina Svitolina, while the 11th-seeded Serena Williams meets the unseeded Barbora Strycova.
Simona Halep is a 1.45 fave to beat Elina Svitolina, and I think the Romanian will satisfy the odds. Svitolina reached Wimbledon semis for the first time in her career, and the Ukrainian has never been a specialist for the grass court.
Also, Svitolina was lucky to face rivals who are not so dangerous on grass. Elina defeated Karolina Muchova in the quarterfinal in straight sets 7-5 6-4, but Muchova was exhausted after a round-of-16 upset over Karolina Pliskova.
On the other side, Halep is playing in a good form at the moment. She easily eliminated Cori Gauff and Shuai Zhang in the previous two rounds to clinch her second Wimbledon semifinal in a career. Also, Halep came to London with a 29-10 record in 2019, while Svitolina won 14 of her 25 matches this season prior to Wimbledon.
The seven-time Wimbledon champ Serena Williams is on her way to tie Margaret Court’s record with 24 Grand Slam titles. Serena had some problems with Alison Riske in the quarterfinal, but she proved her good form with a strong performance in the third set.
Barbora Strycova made another upset in the quarterfinal, defeating Johanna Konta in straight sets. Strycova has already eliminated Kiki Bertens and Elise Mertens, but I think this is the end of the road for Strycova who’s never earned a set in three meetings with Serena.
If Serena continues with her strong performance, she will beat Strycova in straight sets. Serena is a 1.25 fave to win the match straight up, while she’s set at 1.70 to cover a 1.5-set handicap.
