Germany U21 vs. Denmark U21 Game Preview
The reigning champions are looking to open their UEFA European Under-21 Championship campaign with a victory against Denmark who are regarded as underdogs in Group B. Germany are not as strong as they were two years ago when they claimed the trophy but they are still a better than Denmark and anything but Germany win would be an upset.
Germany U21 Team News
Germany won this competition twice, both in the last ten years while they also have a silver medal in 1982 playing as West Germany. Two years ago, the Germans defated England on penalties in the semi-finals and then Mitchell Weiser scored the winner against Spain in the final.
The squad is arguably weaker than the one in 2017 but head coach Stefan Kuntz still has a few super-talented players to work with. Mahmoud Dahoud, Levin Öztunalı, Jonathan Tah, Lukas Klostermann, and Benjamin Henrichs are the ones to lead this generation.
Germany U21 Latest Form
Germany beat England 2-1 in their final friendly game before this tournament. Mahmoud Dahoud opened the scoring in the first half while Felix Uduokhai scored a winner in injury time to snatch a victory for the Germans. They are without a loss in their previous 12 matches and the last defeat came to Norway in October 2017. They were on a six-game winning run before playing a 2-2 stalemate with France in a friendly but they returned to the winning ways with a win over the Young Lions.
Denmark U21 Team News
Denmark are playing at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship for the eighth time but they never reached the final so far. Given the tough competition at this tournament and the strength of their current squad, it is hard to expect Denmark to qualify to the semis ahead of Germany and Serbia. This will be Denmark’s third straight appearance at the Euros and two years ago in Poland, they were eliminated in the group phase.
Head coach Niels Frederiksen has a prolific striker Marcus Ingvartsen who bagged 17 goals in 25 matches for the country and is the national team’s top scorer. He moved from Genk to Union Berlin a few days ago and will be playing in Bundesliga next season. It’s intriguing that the rest of the squad combined for 18 goals in total, which makes Ingvartsen a vital player for this squad.
Denmark U21 Latest Form
Denmark are coming off a 1-0 defeat to Croatia in a friendly last week. They defended very well against the Croats for a major part of the clash and were on the verge of earning a draw before Toma Basic scored the game’s only goal in injury time.
Nils Fredriksen’s men have suffered four defeats in their last six matches and they failed to hit the net in the previous two, which is rather concerning for the team that has an efficient goal-scorer like Ingvartsen. In their defense, both of those losses came to the teams who are playing in this tournament.
Germany U21 vs. Denmark U21 Head to Head
Germany and Denmark have played three times so far and all three duels were played in the last four years. The Germans won all three and two of those finished 3-0 while they scored minimum two goals in each tilt. The all-time goal difference is 8-1 in Germany’s favor.
Germany U21 vs. Denmark U21 Betting Tip
Germany cannot afford to drop any points here if they want to stay in contention for the top spot in the group. The H2H record against Denmark is on their side and three points here are imperative for the Germans. You can back them to win at 1.60 (-170) but in case you are not happy with these odds, then go with Germany to win and to score over 1 goal at 1.90 (-110).
